SA Derby Day Tips — Morphettville

Saturday, May 3rd

One Group 1 around the grounds this Saturday — the South Australian Derby (Race 8) at Morphettville.

What a race.

Intriguing doesn’t quite cover it.

South Australian Derby (2000m) — Morphettville Race 8

ACCIDENTAL BID ($2.90)

Two runs in Australia. Won his debut over a mile, then bounced to 2000m and exploded — winning by almost eight lengths. Like Phar Lap.

Was it the heavy track? Was it the rise in trip? Or is he simply a very good stayer in the making?

John Allen has won four of the last ten SA Derbies and he draws to get the perfect trail. If he sneaks into the field — I have to tip him. He has too much upside. There are unknowns, yes — but this bloke could be anything.

AFTER SUMMER ($6)

The form on the board is hard to ignore. Wasn’t beaten far in the Vinery Stud Stakes at huge odds, then backed that up with a surging effort in the Australian Oaks — her last 200m was her best work, on the back of a very fast tempo.

She’s a genuine stayer. The further they go, the better she gets. An extra 100m is a positive. She takes on the boys — but she’s right up to it. If the favourite doesn’t get in, she’s the one to beat.

SILVASISTA ($5.50)

Seven-day back-up after bolting in at 2800m for the first time in the VRC St Leger. She relished that trip at Flemington, so you know she’ll be strong at the end of the Derby distance.

The question is whether she backs up well after enduring that brutal tempo only seven days ago. She’s got a chance, but I think she’s well found in the market.

BEST ROUGHIE — AUTUMN MYSTERY ($71)

Going better than his form suggests and is looking for a staying trip. Ran well in the VRC Derby with a wide draw against him — he’s good enough. Can improve sharply from a better draw.

Best Bet — Vivy Air (Hawkesbury R8)

Surely she starts favourite.

She probably should have won the Coolmore Classic first-up when she had to ease over heels at a key stage. Last start she took on Sheza Alibi and was well beaten — but she had no luck and started at $21.

We know that’s good form.

This is much easier. She should be at her peak from a good draw. Reece Jones will be looking to hold a spot, and if he finds clear galloping room in the straight — they’ll be beating on margins.

TIP: VIVY AIR — WIN @ $4.20
