Saturday wasn't my day on the punt.
I'll admit it — I gave some back to the bad guys.
But that's punting. If you want to play the long game, you've gotta get used to the lows.
For those who don't know me, I'm Blake Johnston. Ex bookie turned punter. Crowned Australia's Best Tipster by The Great Tip Off.
Saturday, they raced at Rosehill with the rail in the +5m position.
And hallelujah — it played fair. Most horses got their chance.
So now, here are the horses I reckon we can get some cash out of next time they hit the form guide. I need to get some back from those a-holes myself.
PLAINTIFF
First-up for Peter Snowden. Lightly raced, with a terrific record — four wins from five starts, and second in the other.
147 days between runs, wide draw against her. She settled last, restrained early, then warmed up late to clock the 8th-best last 400m of the meeting — peeling off her effort right at the line.
A career-peak rating. She can only improve second-up from a better draw.
TRON BOLT
No hope first-up, coming off 91 days since his last start — a G1 JJ Atkins win in Queensland.
Began okay from the wide draw before being restrained to last. Race shape was against him, but he warmed up late to clock the best last 400m and 200m of the entire meeting.
He'll improve again in the Golden Rose, before peaking in the Caulfield Guineas.
GOD'S WINDOW
Bad luck last preparation — unsuitable race shapes and track patterns throughout. But I loved this return.
Settled worse than midfield, then warmed up late to clock the second-best last 200m of the meeting, still doing his best work right through the line.
He can improve sharply second-up, over further, with a senior jockey aboard. Not sure of his final target, but he might be at his absolute best around 2000m. The Hill Stakes could suit — especially with Lindermann now targeting Melbourne.
THEBLADE
Simply too good first-up. Sat outside the leader in a below-average tempo, and still found the second-best last 200m of the race from a tough spot.
His rating almost matched his debut figure — something he hadn't managed in 10 starts since. The team's finally got him right. He can kick on this entire preparation.
