Randwick Horses To Follow: Black Book Review
By Blake Johnston | Australia's Best Tipster 2024 (The Great Tipoff) | Ex-bookie | Founder, The Leg Up Australia
Randwick played fair on Saturday. If anything, it was a bit down the middle of the track.
So no excuses. Just good, honest form.
I've been through the replays, and here are the horses I'm following from the meeting.
Horses To Follow: Third-Up Peakers
Jamberoo was wide and working second-up on a very fast tempo. The race was set up for the closers, and he still didn't shirk his task. He peaks third-up with less pace on.
Polymnia was very good second-up. She jumped ok before being restrained for cover, then got held up at a key stage. She really hit the line late. She also peaks third-up.
Horses To Follow: Ready Now
Chrispa is ready now. She began ok before going back second-up and I liked the work through the line. Senior jockey on next time would suggest that we can expect sharp improvement.
De Armas put in a good effort second-up, sharply to a mile. She sat closer to the speed from the better draw, hit the front at the furlong and just peaked on her effort late. Expect her to improve again next time.
Athabascan is going well. He began ok before being restrained to the back with the race shape against him. He was asked to go at the 400m and really warmed up late. Give him a better draw and he can improve sharply.
Horses To Follow: Further Now
Plenty from this meeting that I want over more ground.
Soverato had a good second-up run. She began fairly before being restrained to last and hit the line strongly late. Further from a better draw suits.
Grafterburners was very good late. She began well before being restrained to find a spot on the three-wide line with cover. She was no match for the winner, but she might give The Everest a shake. Further now.
Platinum Pantheon had a very good first-up run. He began well before being restrained for cover and found a decent spot, but there was no tempo. I loved the late work. Further now.
Estremo was a good return as a gelding. He got too far back first-up and stuck to the inside (inferior), but still found the line well. Further from a better draw.
Il Passero is busting to win one. He began well before being snagged back to last, and he was given no hope from the wide draw. He hit the line strongly late. Further from a better draw.
God's Window: The Epsom Winner Is Destined For Better
Now for the big one.
God's Window stamped himself as a genuine weight-for-age horse. He came from last, with no weight on his back, but that was the performance of a horse destined for better.
It was also a big day for his rider, Siena Grima, who claimed her first Group 1 ride. And for Chris Waller, who equalled the great Tommy Smith and Gai Waterhouse with a seventh win in the race.
So where do they go next?!
The Black Book
This is what the Black Book is all about.
I watch the replays so you don't have to. I flag the horses that raced better than the result, then alert you when they're ready to strike.
Keep this list handy. When they pop up again, you'll know exactly why.
Good luck if you follow,
BJ
